How To Create Mindful Tea Time Just For You

Many of us are living busy lives and we are constantly surrounded by a sea of texts, emails, calls and notifications. It can start to feel as though we are expected to be contactable at all times. While there are certainly some advantages that come with this wave of new technological advancements, it has also become increasingly difficult to switch off from the world around us and give our minds, bodies and souls the chance to rest and recover.

For this reason, mindfulness meditation has become a large part of many people’s lives. Defined as the practice of purposefully paying attention to the present moment, the extensive list of mindfulness benefits includes improved relaxation, concentration, mood and so much more.

At Allegra & Grace, we believe that the act of brewing a cup of tea presents the perfect opportunity to start implementing mindfulness practice into your daily routine. This simple act of tea drinking can beautifully evoke so many of our senses, give us the opportunity to nurture ourselves and enjoy some much needed time out from our roles and responsibilities. Here are some suggestions on how to practice mindfulness when brewing your next cup of tea.

Step 1

Choose your favourite teacup, whether it’s brightly coloured, delicately patterned, made from glass or ceramic. Place your teacup down and take some time to select your tea. Perhaps you feel like sipping on a calming cup of herbal tea, rich black tea, organic tea, white tea or a revitalising cup of green tea? Remember that this moment is just for you and the choice is completely yours.

Step 2

Turn the kettle on and notice the sound of the water bubbling as it begins to boil. Look for signs of steam escaping from the spout as the water starts to heat. Now is the perfect time to let go of any thoughts that don't serve you and focus on how the water boiling in the kettle will bring your tea to life.

Step 3

Pay attention to your environment, whether it be your own home, your workplace, or the home of a friend or family member. Notice the climate of the room, and consider the feeling of your feet on the ground. Take a few deeps breaths into your belly and when you breathe out remember that this very moment is all there is and it's for you to enjoy.

Step 4

Carefully pour the water into your teacup. Listen to the sound of the water as it slowly fills the cup. If you are using loose leaf tea notice how the tea leaves begin to infuse and expand. If you are using tea bags notice the colour of your water changing as your tea bag begins to seep. What do you see?

Step 4

As you pick up your teacup, notice how warm it feels in your hands. Breathe in the intoxicating fragrance the tea emits and slowly sip the tea, savouring the complex flavours and feeling the warmth as you drink.

While brewing your tea and completing your mindfulness practice, other thoughts may enter your mind. Acknowledge these thoughts, and then let them pass. As you continue to practice mindfulness meditation you will strengthen your abilities and these interrupting thoughts will occur less and less.
